UKAHFT COURSE FORMAT 2019
The following format is to explain what is required when setting targets , the rules explain how they must be shot
INTRODUCTION
Please remember when setting the course that it should be fair to everyone, including shooters with budget scope & small juniors, as what you may think is a hard/fun shot could well be impossible for someone else. The aim is to create a course that can be shot equally by shooters of all sizes & age groups, so targets shouldn’t be positioned to make the shot impossible for a small junior.
Please also ensure that any obstructions in the line of sight cannot move during competition or be shot out of the way by one shooter then be clear for the next. This doesn’t make for a good course and makes it a lottery - ALL shots should be the same for everyone.
Remember this is not a Contortionists sport and shouldn’t be made awkward at the peg.
SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
All targets must have a suitable backstop or a safe fall out zone behind.
There must be NO OBSTRUCTIONS that may cause dangerous ricochets in the shooters line of sight from the firing point, within 8 yards of the rifle muzzle.
When setting out the shooting lanes, ensure other lanes do not encroach on the line of sight within 45 degrees either side of the target on that lane.
Try to keep lanes/pegs either in a straight line or in a horseshoe shape, firing outwards, and avoid forward pegs, which could endanger one shooter from another shooter standing behind on a neighbouring peg.
Ensure your firing lines are clearly defined.
The firing line must not be more than 1ft forwards of the peg at the peg itself & for 3ft either side of the peg.
Check there is no broken glass, brambles, insect nests or other such hazardous materials around.
COURSE
The course of fire will consist of 30 targets with one firing point for each target
All shooting points & targets must be clearly marked No’s 1 to 30 inclusive.
All Targets must be painted with either Yellow or White faceplates with Black Hit zones.
Please ensure that the positional & mini kill targets are equally spread throughout the course.
All non-positional targets must be able to be shot from at least the Prone & Kneeling position.
Standing & Kneeling shots should provide a stable area & level footing around the peg/support with no slopes or humps.
All supported positional shots must be able to be taken from either side of the Peg/Support, with the full faceplate visible for all heights of shooters.
When setting out courses you must place supports and pegs to allow for both right handed, left handed and Junior shooters taking part in the event.
Targets must be fixed / located in such a way to prevent / minimise excessive movement in severely windy conditions.
Targets must be positioned so they are directly facing the peg.
All targets must be able to be checked, so if you use a pole or high shot please bear this in mind.
26 Wooden or plastic pegs of at least 1.5" round/square should be used. All pegs should be clearly visible, project at least 300mm (12”) above the ground & be firmly fixed in the ground. Pegs should not be used for the supported shots as the support is classed as the peg & should be numbered accordingly. The pegs for un-supported shots should be 4" high above the ground.
If a target is set so that the killzone is only fully visible from one side of the peg, then the target must be able to be shot free of obstruction with the fore hand supporting the rifle resting on the ground. A maximum of 6 (3 each side) are allowed of these but only on 20mm to 45mm Killzones, 15mm-19mm kill zones must be seen from both sides of the peg and from a comfortable position.
Standing shots should have a “Standing” sign positioned at the peg which should be clearly visible by a shooter standing at the peg.
Kneeling shots should have a “Kneeling or Standing” sign positioned at the peg which should be clearly visible by a shooter standing at the peg.
ELEVATED SHOTS
All elevated shots (more than 12ft above the horizontal plane of the peg) must have a peg of at least 18” tall and can be shot with the butt of the rifle on the floor. These should not be confused with in the shoulder shots when the butt has to be off the floor.
Elevated shots with kill zones below 35mm must be no closer than 20yds
UN-SUPPORTED SHOTS
There must be 1 x un-supported Standing shot with a hit zone of 35-45mm at 8-35yds
There must be 1 x un-supported Kneeling shot with a hit zone of 35-45mm at 8-35yds
Un-supported positional shots will be denoted by the use of a 4" high peg.
The un-supported kneeler should not be placed at an extreme angle (no more than 30 degrees).
SUPPORTED SHOTS
The definition of a support is the object or objects that is allocated with either a sign or number, and not anything that is surrounding that support
There must be 2 x supported standing shots with hit zones of either 35-45mm at 8-35yds, or 25mm at 8-30yds.
The support on the supported standers must be of sufficient height to cater for tall shooters (6ft+)
There must be 2 x supported kneeling shots with hit zones of 25mm at 8-30yds or 35-45mm at 8- 40yds
Any supported kneeling shots over 35yds MUST have a support to allow a standing shot to be taken. For shots of 35yds or under this is not a requirement as it’s not always possible on some courses.
All supported shots must have the target number on the support as this designates the object that must be used as a support. No peg should be used for these shots.
Please ensure that the supports used are substantial enough not to move too much in the wind or move during the course of fire as this will be highlighted in the course vetting & they will need altering.
IN THE SHOULDER SHOTS
An in the shoulder shot shall be defined as “a shot where the shooter is forced to shoulder the rifle and lift the butt off the ground” (unlike an elevated shot).
No such targets may be set that will require the barrel line / height to be more than 250mm off the floor at the peg when the butt has to be off the ground.
In the shoulder shots shall not be set for 15 – 19mm hit zone targets.
The above standard has been arrived at by using the standard Air Arms S400 stock as a benchmark.
PRONE ONLY
There must be 3 x Prone ONLY shots using any UKAHFT hit zone size. There must be a “Prone only” sign in place at the peg.
ALLOWED NUMBER OF MINI KILLS
Please use common sense on reduced kills and please make sure that mini kills can be seen from both sides of the peg and a comfortable position.
TARGET DISTANCES / KILL SIZES
These distances do not apply to Standing, Kneeling & Targets which are specified separately.
FACEPLATES SIZES
For positional shots there must be at least 25mm of faceplate around the hit zone irrespective of which manufacturer made the target.
All other targets must have at least 10mm.
